Downsizers escape for a rural lifestyle

Downsizers Sylvia and Roy Dowsett were on the hunt for an old property to do up, as they had done with all their previous properties, but driving past Rectory Homes’ The Chilterns development in Haddenham changed their plans, opening their mind to a new build home.

Having always bought old properties which required work, Sylvia and Roy had their sights on an old cottage with the plan to carry out extensive repair and restoration. However, whilst driving around the area considering their options, they came across The Chilternsand decided to go in and have a look at the showhome. Sylvia comments: “We’ve always bought older properties and spent time doing them up and making them exactly how we wanted them, and this is what we were planning on doing with an old cottage we had found. However, when we stumbled across The Chilternswhilst driving through Haddenham we completely changed our minds. We visited the showhome and were just blown away by the quality of the finishes of the kitchens and bathrooms and the setting was just ideal, surrounded by beautiful countryside. We were really drawn to the idea of being able to move straight in somewhere, and the fact it would be low maintenance as everything was brand new.”

The couple were looking to downsize from their large period three bedroom home in Ickenham in the London Borough of Hillingdon, as they hoped for a more rural lifestyle. The couple settled on a four bedroom property set over three floors with its own garden. Sylvia adds: “Even though we were downsizing, we wanted somewhere large enough for our family to come and stay and enjoy it as much as we do. Our previous home, as well as being bigger, was also a lot older and in need of a fair bit of work in terms of repairs, so although four bedrooms isn’t small, the fact it’s brand new means it’s the ideal solution for the lower maintenance lifestyle we were looking for.”

Haddenham itself is a beautiful village, surrounded by stunning countryside, and this is something that also appealed to the couple Sylvia adds: “Our previous home was situated on a very busy road which was very noisy and would only have got busier and noisier with the introduction of HS2, so we wanted to move away to a more peaceful location. Haddenham is perfect for this, it’s right in the middle of the Buckinghamshire countryside, which is stunning, and the local shops are within walking distance. We feel we’ve got the best of both worlds; a rural location, which still has the conveniences we’re used to.”

Although it offers a great deal of rural charm, with its village green and duck pond, Haddenham is superbly connected with a train link to London Marylebone that takes just 34 minutes and the M40 motorway eight miles away. This is perfect for Sylvia and Roy who still travel into London at least twice a week to see grandchildren and also socialise.  Sylvia comments: “I still travel into London at least twice a week to keep up my line dancing hobby – although fortunately I’ve found a lovely class in Haddenham now – and also see my grandchildren, so the fact there are direct rail links to London Marylebone from Haddenham and Thame Parkway is fantastic, and it also has great road links into London so it’s very easy to drive in for an evening.”
